Why the Campaign?

Child Care is an Economic Linchpin

Let’s Grow Kids is a public awareness and engagement campaign about the important role that high-quality, affordable child care can play in supporting the healthy development of Vermont’s children and the prosperity of our economy now and in the future.

Science tells us that a child's earliest years are the most critical to healthy brain development. During the first years, a baby's brain makes 700-1,000 new connections every second, building a foundation for all future development.

For the more than 70% of Vermont children under age six who have all of their parents in the labor force, high-quality child care can provide the nurturing relationships and stimulating learning opportunities they need for healthy development while their parents are working.

However, high-quality child care is inaccessible and unaffordable for too many Vermont families. In fact, nearly half of infants and toddlers likely to need care do not have access to any regulated care, and nearly 80% have no access to high-quality programs.

This is not only a missed opportunity for Vermont's kids—it also forces parents who have to juggle work and family to make tough choices—and when working parents have to leave their jobs because they can't find child care, employers lose out, too.

Because Vermont’s shortage of high-quality, affordable child care is a serious challenge for our communities and our economy, our goal is to gain public support leading to increased, sustainable investments that give all children the chance to reach their full potential.
