I am writing in support of new legislation that would form a Blue Ribbon Commission aimed at researching financing options for affordable, high-quality childcare in Vermont. I am thrilled that Gov. Shumlin has acknowledged the importance of this issue and is giving it the attention it deserves by including this legislation in his 2016 budget proposal.
The knowledge that learning and development during a child's first years of life is irreplaceable when it comes to how she will learn in the future, makes this prospect all the more concerning. I also know that our family is not unique; as 72 percent of Vermont's children under the age of 6 have both parents in the workforce. This is an issue I would imagine is faced by many families across the state.
That is why I wholeheartedly support the formation of this Blue Ribbon Commission to explore how we can make access to high-quality childcare a reality for all Vermont children and families.
